Alicia Marie Church died from a short illness of ovarian cancer on May 31, 2023 at the age of 68. Alicia was born on October 24, 1954 to her parents, Victor Byron Church and Irene Diane Shelton Church in Vallejo, California, their first and oldest girl of nine sib!ings. She spent her earlier years moving with her family from California to Iowa to Tennessee to New Jersey to Nova Scotia Canada and to Alabama and then to Maryland on her own. Her middle and high school years were spent in Nova Scotia until 1973. Alicia graduated from Pell City High School in Pell City, Alabama in 1973.
Alicia spent a short time at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, only to migrate to Silver Spring, Maryland. Alicia found work at a telephone operator at C & P Telephone Company in Maryland in 1976. She retired from Verizon formerly C & P Telephone Company after 22 years. Alicia was soon hired as a temporary assistant at Montgomery Collaboration Council for Children, Youth & Families. Alicia worked for them for 13 years up to the time of her death. Alicia was recently promoted from Office Manager to Operations Manager.
Alicia had many talents and passions. She loved to crochet afgans during the pandemic. She loved listening to audiobooks. She would run our family monthly Zoom chats during and after the pandemic. She loved spending time with her great nephews, Caleb King and Scott Spillers.
Alicia loved God. She showed her love of God in her many volunteer hats she wore over the years as a devoted member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and as a FRED (the teen youth group, Parish Council, Parish directory chairperson, Chaperone on World Youth Day trips, RCIA sponsor. She served three years on the Diocesan Council. Alicia taught Confirmation classes too. She loved her time and friends from the Bible Study group on Saturday morning.
She loved all of her nieces and nephews, Jacquelyn Roebuck, Lucinda (Joe) Grant, Joe Harmon, Geoffrey (Lauren) Roebuck, Rachel Harmon and Ashley ( Damond) Cottingham. And Great nieces and great nephews too Victoria, Jackson, Tyson, Brooklyn, Annabelle, Mia, Shawn, Brantley, Drake, Laelah, Charlotte and Ryan.
Alicia is preceded in death by her parents, Victor Byron Church and Irene Diane Shelton Church, brothers Larry Scott Church and James Lewis Church and sisters Carol Irene Church Harmon and Kathleen Claire Church Williams and brother in law Lamar Williams.
A Memorial Services for Alicia will be held on Saturday September 23, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Derwood, Maryland. Viewing from 10 to 11 am followed by Funeral Mass at 11:00 -12 pm. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland. Reception will follow. Location to be announced at a later date.
Alicia is survived by her brother Waldo (Susan) of O'Fallon, Illinois, sister Evelyn (Tim) of Kingsport, Tennessee, brother Carl of Millcreek, Utah and brother Victor of Millcreek, Utah. She is survived by many cousins and as well as first and second cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Alicia's honor.
The family would like to send special thanks to our cousins Margaret and Lou Church and Victor and Eve Church and first cousins Joanna, Isabel and Ben who helped care for Alicia when she got sick. Also the family would like to thank Betty B., C.C., Trish and others from the Bible Study group at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Derwood Maryland.Most of all our family wants to say thank you to all the nurses and doctors at Montgomery Village Health Care Center in Montgomery Village, Maryland, where Alicia spent several months and her last days. Alicia was given excellent care and treatment while she was there.
