She was born on October 13, 1928, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to the late George S. and Mary (Staviscak) Soltis. She attended the former Sacred Heart of Jesus Slovak Grade School and graduated from James M. Coughlin High School in 1947. In 1949 she joined her sister, Florence, in Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Patent and Trademark Office.
She married the love of her life, Arthur McDermott, in 1961. In 1963 they settled in Riverdale, Maryland, and she became a homemaker. She returned to work for the government in 1975, and retired from the Department of Health and Human Services in 1990.
She traveled extensively throughout her life, enjoying many road trips throughout the U.S. and Canada, exploring Europe and anywhere else that piqued her interest. In her retirement years she could be found reading a good book or in a water aerobics class. Although they arrived late in life, she loved just being with her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband and eight brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children, Sharon McDermott (Peter Noppenau) of Washington, D.C.; Kevin McDermott (Tamara Fackler) and grandchildren Clare, Connor and Patrick, of Alexandria, VA; David McDermott, of Baltimore, MD; her sister, Marie Gruskiewicz of Edison, NJ; her sister-in-law, Maurita Soltis, of Wilkes-Barre, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
