On February 25, 2022 our mother passed away in the company of her family, after a very long illness. Her daughter Martha, son Webster Thurston with daughter-in-law Melody, and son Manuel Lisandro were at her side. She was from Chamelecon in the Sula Valley of Honduras, daughter of rancher Manuel Lisandro Rivera and Honoria Torrente Manning. Her sister, Elvia Julia Rivera Batty of New Orleans, predeceased her in 2009.
During World War II she wed US Navy Supply Corps officer Charles Lawrence Knight of New Orleans, moving on to multiple tours of duty in the US and abroad, until finally settling the family in DC in 1960. Her husband Captain Larry Knight, predeceased her in 1975. Our father and she were devoted to education, and personal betterment for all children, often opening their home to numerous relatives and friends from Louisiana, Honduras and other countries.
Aminta was employed at the Organization of American States for 19 years. She was able to pursue charity initiatives with groups such as Navy Relief, PALCO and the Honduran Women's Society which she helped found. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Noelle Knight (Sylvanus Mars), Bryana Armstrong (Michael) and Lawrence, and great grandchildren Thurston Mars and Cade Patrick Armstrong. She will be interred with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery later this year. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 noon, Saturday, March 19, in St. Ann Catholic Church at 4001 Yuma Street NW, Washington, DC 20016.
The family commends the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for the care they provided our mother over many years. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Capital Caring Health, 50 F Street NW, Washington DC 20001.
At St. Ann Church, parking is available in the long alley found immediately behind the church off Yuma St. NW.
