
Amy was a native of Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Cliff Millen and Pauline McNerney Millen. Her father was an influential political reporter for the Des Moines Register, and her mother was a collector of rare books and antiques.
Amy graduated from Iowa State University, and moved to Washington, D.C. in the late 1950's, and enjoyed a distinguished career as an editor with the Comptroller of the Currency.
During her forty-seven year professional career, Amy was employed by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency ultimately held the position as the Senior Editor for many of its prominent publications for use domestically and internationally. For her publications and the designs, Amy received excellence awards from the juried shows of the Federal Design Council, of which she became the Vice President. Amy also worked for the European Communities Information Service and the National Broadcasting Company.
Amy was a member of the Cosmos Club for past eight years. Amy served as the chair of the Arts Committee from 2018 to 2021, and before that she was a member of the same Committee for three years. Under Amy's leadership, the Arts Committee consistently brought well attended popular art programs and art exhibitions to the Club; produced "Art at the Cosmos Club", a colored booklet (2020) highlighting the Cosmos Club's permanent art collection; initiated a series of talks around its collection titled "A Matter of Taste: Art and Cocktails at the Cosmos Club"; and established a decorative arts series to commence in 2021. She helped to raise funds as well as provided consultation for the restoration of the Tacca Fountain. Amy was appointed to serve on the Task Force of Club Names, under the direction of the Board of Management. Amy participates in many Club activities and is a regular subscriber of the Concert Series. She is enthusiastic about helping the Club reboot its membership growth and help select qualified candidates for the Club.
She was active in the Washington D.C. community as a founder and organizer of a group devoted to empowering women on economic and investment issues, "Women and Money", and she participated in study and discussion groups on current events and foreign policy. She enjoyed international travel, including river cruises and a safari in Tanzania.
She is survived by cousins V. John White of Sacramento, California, Mary Byrd of Sedona, Arizona Mary Byrd, Joseph McNerney, Elizabeth Thayer, David McNerney, Sarah McNerney, Robert McNerney, Daniel McNerney, Bridget McNerney, Angela McNerney, Edwin McNerney, and Matthew McNerney.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 10:30am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Ambrose Cemetery at the Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. A celebration of Amy's life will be held at the Cosmos Club at a later date.
