Ann Kilpatrick Webster, known from a very young age as Tuttie, was born in Washington, D.C. on April 11, 1930 to Howard Cecil Kilpatrick and Bessie Smith Kilpatrick, both from Alabama. Along with her brothers Cecil and Thom she grew up at Mackall Hill in Georgetown. She attended District of Columbia public schools and the Madeira School and graduated from Sweet Briar College.
She married George Drury Webster in 1952. With him she restored the home and gardens at his family farm in Hawkins County, Tennessee. After working in an architect’s office, Tuttie taught in the Montgomery County school system and then at the Potomac School. In addition to many years of Bible study classes she completed the Education For Ministry program. She was a Sunday School teacher for her children and then, in time, her grandchildren.
A devoted gardener, in middle age she earned a Master Gardener degree from the University of the District of Columbia. A woman of strong Christian faith, she was a long-time parishioner and dedicated volunteer at All Saints Church in Chevy Chase, MD. Tuttie volunteered for many organizations and causes, including the Florence Crittenden Home, the Beauvoir School library, Friendship Terrace, and All Hallows Guild (the garden guild of the Washington National Cathedral). In a favorite volunteer assignment, Tuttie worked in the Ambulatory Surgery Center of Sibley Hospital for 12 years, ending her career at the age of 90 when the coronavirus pandemic began.
She was a faithful friend to many, and treasured several lifelong friendships. Tuttie died at home on August 29, 2023 after a brief illness. Tuttie’s husband George predeceased her in 1996. She is survived by her beloved sister in law, Ann Marie Kilpatrick Terry of Mobile, Alabama; by her three children: Aen Walker Webster, George Drury Webster III (Elizabeth Latta), and Hugh Kilpatrick Webster (K. deLancey Joyce); by eight grandchildren: Sarah Webster Ellis, deLancey (Webster) Lewis, Walker Smith Webster, Katherine Floyd-Jones Webster, George Kilpatrick Webster, Helen Sherman Webster, George Drury Webster IV, and Hugh Walker Webster; and by many other loving relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at All Saints Church in Chevy Chase, Maryland on a date to be announced later.
