
Anna-Stina Ericson died Monday, August 19, 2024, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. She was born on January 12, 1926, in Swissvale, PA, the daughter of Anders and Sally (nee Lind) Ericson. She was a 1944 graduate of Winchester Thurston School in Pittsburgh; received her bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1948; and earned a master’s in economics from the University of Pittsburgh. She retired from the Department of Labor in 1979 after a full career where she was an expert in Western Hemisphere labor issues, about which she published several studies. She served on the US-Mexico Border Commission, earning a commendation from President Lyndon Johnson.
Anna-Stina enjoyed an active retirement travelling the US and the world. As recently as last month she visited her great-grand niece in Michigan. She particularly enjoyed meeting relatives in Sweden and cruising in the Baltic in the summer of 2023. In the 1980s she lived in Paris for an extended period and went to Bosnia to help register voters after the civil war attendant upon the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. In addition to travel, she was committed to charitable and community work. She was a mainstay at Meals on Wheels, Ward Circle until it closed during the Covid pandemic. She organized tea socials for residents of Iona House. She sang in the Cathedral Choral Society and played a vital leadership role in the Friday Morning Music Club. She was active in the life and ministries at Christ Church Georgetown where she was a member for almost 75 years. She served on its vestry, headed up its chapters of the Society of the Cross of Nails and Friendly Visitors. She assisted numerous Seminary students in their discernment process. In addition, she supported a plethora of charities that focused on education, feeding, health, and the environment.
Above all, Anna-Stina loved her extended family deeply and wide circle of friends and they loved her back. She is survived by her beloved older sister, Britta Chambers of Gaithersburg; her nieces Emily (Harry) Volz of Frederick; Betsy (Stuart) Smith of McLean; Becky (Patrick) Mitchell of Bainbridge Island, WA; her nephew Timothy Chambers of Silver Spring; her grandnephew Cameron Smith of Morgantown, WV; her grandnieces Britta (Roberto) Volz of Ann Arbor, MI; Katie (Joel) Ellis of Jacksonville, FL; Olivia Mitchell of Bainbridge Island, WA; and Siena Chambers of Nagoya, Japan; and two great-grandnieces. She was preceded in death by her niece Penelope Chambers.
A funeral eucharist will be held at Christ Church, Georgetown on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at 10:00 AM with a reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that friends wishing to honor Anna-Stina’s life make a donation in her name to a charity of their choice.
