“Barby” as she was known to friends and family, grew up in Chevy Chase, MD, but she was always quick to share her South Dakota heritage, including her Governor/Senator grandfather who was the reason her family came to the area. She was a proud graduate of Blessed Sacrament and Georgetown Visitation Preparatory Schools in Washington, DC, and also studied at the University of Maryland. She worked various jobs throughout her life, two favorites of which were supporting her brother-in-law, Jim O’Boyle, in his legal practice, and then upon his retirement serving as an aid to deaf and hard of hearing students at Montgomery College.
Barby loved spending time with her family and friends whenever and wherever she could, and while she enjoyed seeing new places she had a particularly soft spot for the beach. Growing up visiting Rehoboth and Bethany Beaches in the summers, she later bought a home in nearby Ocean View and enjoyed many long weekends and holidays there soaking up the fresh air and sun. Her door was always open, and it wasn't uncommon for family, friends and neighbors to come by and say hello, always leaving with a smile on their faces. She enjoyed meeting new people too and was always ready to chat, listen, laugh and give a hug. And she especially loved anything and everything involving her granddaughters, who affectionately referred to her as Beazy.
Barby is survived by her husband, Dave, and four children: Billy, Claire, Dennis and Kathleen (Brian Mayglothling), as well as her granddaughters Anna & Casey Mayglothling. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews who loved her as Aunt B, and in-laws who thought of her as a sister. She was predeceased by her parents, Evelyn and William Bulow, sisters Kay Mullally O'Boyle and Renee Buettner, and a brother William who died in infancy.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday July 12, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockville, MD (520 Veirs Mill Road, 20852). Visitation will begin at 9:30am with a Mass at 10:30 am and a reception to follow to continue celebrating her life beginning at 1:30pm at Argyle Country Club, 14600 Argyle Club Road, Silver Spring, MD.
In lieu of giving flowers, the family invites you to consider supporting Frederick & Montgomery County Hospice if you wish.
