March 5, 1931 to December 16, 2021
Devoted husband to late wife Joan and loving father and grandfather to 8 children and 17 grandchildren (even 2 great grandchildren) died peacefully in his sleep on December 16, 2021 after a short hospital stay. He always had a smile on his face when greeting people; family, acquaintances, those who helped him through life, even the delivery person at the door. A devout catholic, he was revered at St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood where he and Joan served faithfully for 30+ years as Eucharistic ministers, parish counsel, local representatives for the Right to Life MD, Knights of Columbus. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge before marrying Joan Gerstner in 1953. An electrical engineer by training, he had a good head for solving the simplest to the most complicated of issues in life. Quick with a joke to lighten the mood in any situation or bring cause for sighs to his many puns, at trait he passed on to his eight children, and always a gentleman; he was adored by those he met. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his wife Joan Kathryn (Gerstner) and his son Thomas McLoughlin. He was survived by his sister Anne Christine Jackson and her husband Handley of Boonville, NY and his children (and grand children); Steven McLoughlin of Alachua, FL (Darshan & Radha Flanders), Geralyn Falco & her husband Michael of Swampscott, MA (Carlo, Patrick Falco & Rosalia Poulin), Michael McLoughlin and his wife Connie of Tulsa, OK (Ryan & Miranda McLoughlin), John McLoughlin of Bethesda, MD (Mairead & Nigel McLoughlin), Daniel McLoughlin and his wife Betsy of Damascus, MD (Matthew McLoughlin), Ronald McLoughlin and his wife Tabitha of Derwood, MD (Lauren Warner, Kyle & Lucius McLoughlin), and Kathy Noah and her husband Karl of Frederick, MD (Cameron, Shannon, Sean & Colleen Noah).
A catholic mass will be said for Bernard at St. Francis of Assisi church in Derwood, MD on January 4, 2022 at 11 am, with a public visitation at the church starting at 10 am. Followed by burial at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, MD.
