David W. Dunn passed away on July 30, 2021, much too soon for his family to whom he was devoted. He fought many battles with heart issues for many years, never complaining during multiple rehabs, always resilient and ready for the next fight. He was overmatched in the final round.
David was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Sally Dunn, and his brother Richard. He was three years old when he came to America with his mother on an arduous ship journey from Hong Kong to join his father. The family resided in various parts of Washington, DC, eventually landing permanently in the Chevy Chase area.
David graduated from McKinley Technical High School in D.C. He became an electrical engineer upon graduation from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he turned into a life-long Cowboys fan. For twenty-three years, he worked for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, the Navy’s equivalent of the Army Corps of Engineers. David enjoyed his job tremendously, as his work took him to many different countries around the world where American naval bases are located. He extended these business trips with personal side trips to Europe, Asia, and the middle East. He had settled in Virginia Beach during his civilian career with the Navy. Upon his marriage in 1988 to his wife, Elissa (Lisa), he relocated to Maryland and accepted a position as an electrical construction project manager with the Department of Agriculture from which he retired fifteen years later.
David was an avid skier and was rated as an expert on alpine skiing. He was also a rabid tennis fan. He played club tennis for decades until his doctor advised him to hang up his racket. He did so with great reluctance. Besides enjoying sports in his spare time in Virginia Beach, he volunteered with the annual Harborfest as chairman of the Logistics and Entertainment Committees for several years.
Besides his loving wife of thirty-two years, David is survived by his beloved daughter Alison, son-in-law Dr. Kealan Hobelmann, four adorable granddaughters, and many cherished in-laws, nephews, and cousins, here and in Canada.
