I worked with Doug for many years both at  NIH and through the US Public Health Service.  I was always glad when Doug and I served on a committee together.   I knew that the job would be done well and that we would have fun doing it.  Doug was a dedicated  laboratory  animal veterinarian, hard working,  but always a generous colleague with a great sense of humor.  He will be greatly missed.

I worked with Doug when he was at NIH.  He was a hard-driving champion for humane animal care and use and for the USPHS.  I extend my sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.

I met Doug in Poolesville NIH. He was a good veterinarian, and we got along working through cases together. I'll miss him.

I had the privilege of working with Doug after he retired when he helped support NIHAC during a time of low staffing. He was so much fun to work with and had such a wealth of knowledge. It was always a good day when he was there. It was an honor to have had the opportunity to work with him even though it was for a short amount of time.

I had the pleasure of working with Doug on the Animal Care and Use Committee for the  Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.  Doug served as the committee's veterinarian from 2012-2023 where his vast knowledge and generosity helped our researchers and assisted the whole Smithsonian's IACUC program become better.  

He loved talking about his family and animals.

I interacted with Doug over many years. Doug was a great guy and an astute and compassionate lab animal veterinarian. A memorable experience working with Doug was when we worked together on the 
Vet Pac for the veterinary category for the PHS. We organized a veterinary exhibit at the Baltimore Convention Center when the Public Health Meeting was in Baltimore called "Preventionville" and arranged for Surgeon General Satcher and Colin Powell to be guest speakers. Doug was kind, generous and a true credit to the veterinary profession and will be missed by all of us.

Very sorry to hear about Doug.  He was such a dedicated veterinarian.

When working with Dr. Powell, you would want to be on his team; he was a fierce defender of his people! He was very kind to us (DLAR staff) and had a great sense of humor. He was very knowledgeable and could do the work of 5 men. Rest easy, Dr. Powell; you were loved, and you will be missed!

I worked with Doug at NIH. As all the posts say, Doug was a very good guy and a great colleague. Honest, kind, fair and an excellent non-human primate doctor. A good hearted person.

I met Dr. Powell at UMD as an undergraduate working at CARF. He became a mentor to me and I will never forget his kindness, generosity and support as I navigated my way into vet school and beyond. His fearlessness in the face of challenge and his unwavering dedication to animal welfare were and continue to be an inspiration to me as I follow in his monkey vet footsteps. His legacy as an advocate for animals, science and public health will live on through the many lives he inspired.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Powell family.  I met Doug when I was in vet school and he was a mentor for me while I was in the Public Health Service.  I will always treasure his advice and appreciate our years of friendship after I became a vet in Montgomery County.

As a very new PHS officer, I looked up to Doug as an exemplary officer. He was kind, smart, attentive, and generous with his time and knowledge. My heartfelt condolences to his loving family.

Deveda and Nicole. Doug was such a great guy (and brother-in-law many years ago).  I will always remember his kind generous soul.  I will continue to pray for all of you during this difficult time.

I'll be forever grateful to Doug for hiring me at the University of Maryland. He was a phenomenal leader for DLAR and his DLAR family will miss him.

I met Doug in my first days at NIH, and found him to be a warm, giving, and funny guy. He was a fine veterinarian and a good person overall. He touched many lives at NIH and his contributions to public health care were profound. Our sincere condolences to his family.

Doug hired me as a young and green vet at NIH. He was so kind to me, such a steady mentor and friend and taught me so much just by being a great boss. He spoke often and with such great love about his family. I am grateful to have crossed paths with this good and generous man.

Dr. Powell is a big reason why I ended up working as a laboratory animal veterinarian. And he guided me to look into the US Army Veterinary Corps. This was instrumental advice he provided to a young veterinary student.  To his family I hope you remember his love for the monkeys and realize the impact he had on mentoring many people over his career. I’m glad to say his name every time I share my story of how I got into lab animal medicine. Thanks Doug, and god bless!

My condolences to all of Doug's extended family on the loss of your beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  Also, condolences to the laboratory animal community which is where I interacted with Doug during his years at the NIH.  We were both veterinarians with the Division of Veterinary Resources and shared the love of animals and support of the many interesting projects in our areas.  I'm glad to know Doug had time to enjoy fishing, crabbing, and playing with his grandchildren after retirement.  He will be well remembered.

I have so many great memories of Doug in the ‘hood, at Terps games, and at the river. Doug was so kind and so much fun to be with. God bless the beautiful family he had to leave behind. He fought so hard.
