Ed was born on November 17th, 1938 to Bernadette Ann Andrews and Floyd Eugene Andrews in East Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up one of 6 children, with 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Ed lived his early years and completed most of his schooling in Ohio, attending St. Philomena Elementary School and St. Ignatius High School, to which he was awarded a scholarship. He attended Fenn College/Cleveland State University, also on a scholarship, earning a B.E.S in 1961. Then on to John Carrol University, earning a M.S. in 1963. He would also meet Rosalie Klepper, who was to become his beloved wife, in Cleveland at a NASA Halloween party there in 1963. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this past June.
The couple moved to State College, Pennsylvania in 1968 for Ed to complete his PHD in underwater acoustics at Penn State University. Ed would remain a Penn State fan for the rest of his life. Their only, and coincidentally favorite son, Edward Carl Andrews, II, was born there in 1971. In 1979, the family moved to Derwood, Maryland, where Ed went to work with a Defense contractor. He continued to work for variations of that same contractor for the rest of his career, in both Rockville, Maryland and Crystal City, Virginia. He received multiple commendations over his career and published numerous scientific articles both in his field and more personal ones that merged his scientific knowledge with his Catholic faith.
As their son grew up, Ed was active in most of the sports and activities his son participated in, including scouts and especially with Potomac Valley swimming. His basement workshop was the home to many father and son weekend projects over the years. Ed also served as the President of the PTA for Magruder High School, where his son attended. After his retirement, Ed and his wife Rosalie traveled, spent more time with family and Ed took up writing a book. Their first grandson was born in 2010, followed by two more in 2012 and 2014. Ed enjoyed watching their antics as they grew up, being reminded of his childhood years with his siblings.
Ed is survived by his wife, Rosalie Andrews, sisters, Claire Andrews and Bernadette Andrews, brother, Dan Andrews, son, Edward Andrews II, and grandsons, Lachlan, Sullivan and Desmond Andrews. He joins in heaven, his mother and father, Bernadette Ann and Floyd Eugene Andrews, and brothers, Gene Andrews and Thomas Andrews.
Ed loved to reminisce and tell stories. So, please be sure to leave your favorite memory or share a story over to the left side of this page.
