

E.E. (Al) Vargo (95) passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023. He was born on September 3, 1928 in Castle Shannon, Pennsylvania to Louis Vargo and Rebecca Toth Vargo. Al spent most of his young life in Cleveland, Ohio where he was very involved in his church, The First Hungarian Reformed Church and where he met his beloved wife, Betty Hartman. They were married on June 15, 1957.
Al was extremely proud of his Hungarian heritage and was a member of many fraternal, masonic and cultural organizations and received numerous awards throughout his career recognizing his accomplishments. In 1992, he was honored as Fraternalist of the Year by the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress. Before his retirement in 1996, he served as the President of the William Penn Association, a fraternal life insurance company. After he retired, Al continued to stay active as Vice Chairman of the Board at WPA and worked with his daughter and son-in-law serving clients until he was 87 years old. He was also a dedicated volunteer at the Lord’s Table and Fourth Presbyterian School. Al adored his six grandchildren, and they kept him and Betty busy with babysitting in their early days and then attended multiple sporting events throughout the years.
In addition to his wife, Al is survived by three daughters, Karen Walker (Don), Diane Malloy (Marty), Sharon Olson (Brad) and his six grandchildren, Garrett and Ava Walker, Haley and Sarah Malloy, Connor and Kelsey Olson. He is also survived by his younger brother Bob Vargo (Liz), brother-in-law Frank Hartman (Carol) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his older brother Lou Vargo.
Al will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a true gentleman who was always willing to help those in need. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, family and patriotism. A celebration of a life well lived will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 10, 2024, at Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church.
