Henry Lynn Maines, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away on June 17, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, love, and a deep appreciation for the present moment. Born on October 28, 1932, in Oxen Hill, Maryland, Henry was the son of Glen Maines and Maybelle Maines (later Dean).
Henry’s childhood included adventures all over DC and Maryland. His education began at Millard's Preparatory School, continued at Hilder Prep School, and culminated at Western High School in Washington, D.C., where he graduated. He then pursued his passion for engineering at the United States Naval Academy, where he obtained a degree in electrical engineering in 1956. On that same day, he married his sweetheart, Georgana Diaz Dancico. Henry went on to serve as a pilot in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960, proudly dedicating himself to his country.
Henry then switched gears and enrolled at Georgetown University from 1961 to 1966, earning a BS and a DDS. He established his own dental practice at the Wildwood Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he faithfully served his patients for an impressive 36 years, from 1966 to 2002.
Henry's Naval Academy yearbook described him as a diligent and tenacious individual. Even back then, he expressed a keen interest in philosophy. Henry's perseverance was an outstanding trait, and he formed numerous genuine friendships during his time at the academy. He was particularly involved in the Foreign Relations Club, showcasing his command in that field. Henry (or “Hank” as he was called at the Academy) was known to be stubborn at times, but his commitment to hard work was his real defining trait.
Throughout his life, Henry remained dedicated to exploring the meaning of our existence and the importance of mindfulness. He had a profound understanding of the present moment, which he believed to be the only true reality. Henry's thoughts and ideas on these subjects were captured in his writings and discussions, leaving behind a rich tapestry of wisdom for others to ponder. Henry practiced what he preached, gifting his family with time and hours of discussion. He was not a man who was given to small talk. He wanted to talk about things that mattered deeply to him, and use his time on earth wisely. He was always conscious that it was finite.
Henry will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 67 years, Georgana, who stood by his side through the ups and downs of life. He leaves behind two sons, Andrew and Daniel, who will forever be grateful for Henry’s love and care. His daughter-in-law, Lindsay, and grandchildren, Jack, Ella, Wyatt, and Atticus, will fondly remember their beloved Papa and the joy he brought to their lives.
In addition to his immediate family, Henry is survived by his brother, Harry, and sister, Dallas Herrington. He is also survived by his brothers in law, Valentin Dulay and Eugene Dancico, and sister in law Judy Dancico. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Glen (Bud), Joe, Paul, and Frank, and his sisters, Carolyn D’Avanzo and Edna Carrington.Henry Lynn Maines will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished grandfather, and a steadfast brother. His commitment to living in the present moment and his unwavering pursuit of wisdom will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. As we reflect on the meaning of our time together, we express our deepest gratitude to Henry for his active listening, steady presence, and the profound impact he had on our lives. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his teachings guide us on our journey forward.
A celebration of life will be held in the Fall, details to follow. Cards of condolence for Georgana may be mailed to 25 Rockingham Court, Germantown, MD, 20874.
