

James Michael Sullivan, “Sully”, was born on May 11, 1933 in Washington D.C. to Harry and Catherine Sullivan. Jim attended St. Gabriel’s elementary school, Central high school, and Eastern high school. He was the quarterback on the winning championship football team in 1951 and graduated that spring. He later received a scholarship to Bullis Preparatory School and Kansas State University.
Jim later joined the United States Air Force for four years, where he was a mechanic. He always wanted to be a pilot, so after graduation from the Air Force, he became a pilot for Allegheny/U.S.Air. He was a commercial airline pilot for thirty-four years, retiring as Chief Pilot in 1991.
He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, Margaret "Peggy" Sullivan, and his three daughters, Cecelia Hogan (Matt), Joan Addie (Richard, deceased), and Catherine Youngman (divorced). He had six grandchildren, Trevor Addie-Carter (Brian), John Hogan (Mariah Wood), Maggie Hogan, Bailey Addie (Bailey), Kelly Youngman, and Amelia Youngman. He is also survived by his two sisters, Elaine Egger and Marcia Behun, as well as two sisters-in law, Ann Small (deceased), and Sue Hynson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, and deeply loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His gentle nature, kind eyes, sweet smile, and warm heart will live on in spirit. May his soul rest in peace.
Family and friends may call at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 9200 Kentsdale Dr, Potomac, MD 20854 on Saturday, August 9, 2025 from 10 to 11 am with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11 am.
