On June 9, 2023 James Edward Thompson of Potomac, Maryland passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and daughters, at the age of 75. Jim was the beloved husband of his high school sweetheart, Janice. He is also survived by his daughter, Tiffany Violante and her husband Jared Violante; daughter Amanda Thompson and her husband Greg Sullivan. He was also Grandpa to Lia Violante and Sienna Violante, and his “granddoggy” Elodie.
Jim was born in Annapolis, Maryland on September 22, 1947 to Betty Jane and Edward E. Thompson. He graduated from Robert E. Peary High School in 1965 and matriculated to the University of Maryland, where he discovered his affinity for accounting and finance. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1970 and earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation in 1971. In 1992 he earned his Masters in Taxation from The American University. Seeking a way to deepen his commitment to his tax clients, Jim affiliated with Raymond James in 1993, launching his second career as a Financial Advisor. The genuine care he conveyed and sage advice he provided to clients resulted in an incredibly successful and rewarding career. His passion for his work and love of his clients was so strong that he continued to work until the very end. His business legacy is carried on by his daughter Tiffany and son-in-law Jared.
Jim is remembered fondly for his bright smile, infectious laughter and sense of humor, as well as his passion for golf and ice cream. Myrtle Beach, SC was his “home away from home,” with golf trips beginning in the 1970’s and family vacations from the 1980’s through today. The trips will no doubt provide cherished memories to family, friends and longtime golfing buddies who accompanied him there regularly. He was a loyal fan and strong supporter of the Maryland Terrapins, with a particular affinity for basketball and football. His girls all have fun memories of accompanying him to games starting at young ages.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Casey House – Montgomery Hospice or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held June 23, 2023. Please contact the family for details.
