

Julia “Julie” F. Crater, 86, of Potomac, MD passed away peacefully at home on September 11 surrounded by her family. Julie was born to the late Gerald McFadden Francis and Mona Keith Francis of Takoma Park, MD where she grew up with her three siblings. She was a graduate of Blair High School and The College of William and Mary. Education was very important to Julie which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed listening to all genres of music and began playing the piano at an early age. Julie shared her passion for music with the community by teaching piano lessons to members of the neighborhood, leaving a lasting legacy of melody and joy in those she taught. Throughout her life she was devoted to helping others and gave freely of her time and love. Family, friends and strangers were all beneficiaries of Julie’s generosity and kindness. Her selflessness serves as a reminder of the power of kindness. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and recipients of “Honey’s” unconditional love. She had a special relationship with each one and was devoted to their happiness and success. “Honey” recognized and celebrated their talents, achievements, successes, and pursuits. Her kindness, smile, and infectious laugh will be cherished memories for all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Julie is survived by her husband of 65 years, Quincy M. Crater II “Chip”, her sister Marian Long (Robert), her daughters Susan York (Tucker) and Cathryn White (Jon), and her seven amazing grandchildren – Ty, Quincy, Eloise and Brooke York, and Haley, Jack and Meredith White. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Don (Delores) and Jerry (Linda) Francis.
A memorial service to celebrate Julie’s life will be held on November 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Potomac Presbyterian Church, 10301 River Rd, Potomac, MD.
