August 15, 1925 - June 20, 2022
Mary Wu left us on June 20, 2022 at her home in Clarksburg, MD. Born in Xin Chai Village in Henan, China, her life was packed with adventure, unconditional love, undying respect for family and a propensity to care for others before herself.
As a child, at the peak of the Sino-Japanese War, by a miracle, she was able to escape Japanese capture, evacuating with her middle school, leaving her family to survive their own escape. Post war, Mary continued to matriculate her education to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a medical doctor, pursuing her studies at Aurora Medical University in Shanghai in 1952. Upon graduation, she earned an internship and residency at Beijing Hospital.
Two years later, she met her late husband, Edward K. Wu, a vibrant internationally renowned journalist. They married October 31, 1954.
Shortly after their marriage, turmoil struck China again. She and Eddie fled to Burma to be with Eddie’s family. From Burma, they moved to Taiwan to live for a short time with Eddie’s late brother, Kenneth Wu, and his wife Jennie and their children, Arthur and Jade.
Mary and Eddie moved to Hong Kong in 1960 when Eddie became Baltimore Sun’s Hong Kong Bureau Chief. In 1969, they joyously welcomed their son, Teddy, at which time Mary became a full-time mother, homemaker, and event and dinner planner for all of Eddie’s world class journalism contacts. Her authentic Chinese cuisine was revered by many near and far and, mostly, among family.
In 1980, when Eddie retired, Mary, Eddie and Teddy moved to the United States in Silver Spring, White Oak, to be close to his brother Ken and family.
Mary resumed her education at Montgomery College to now become a Medical Technologist, to maintain her tie to medicine. In 1987, she landed a position at DC Village. In 1992, she and her family settled in their Berwyn Heights, MD home, then again to their Silver Spring White Oak home.
In 1998, her dear husband Eddie departed, yet Mary maintained the household with Teddy. In that time, she was employed at DC General Hospital, eventually retiring from the DC Central Lab in 2007.
In due time, Mary was overjoyed, welcoming her immediate family’s expansion with a beautiful daughter-in-law, Jessie, and later her two lovely pride and joys, granddaughters Linda in 2010 and Lisa in 2012. In 2016, outgrowing their Silver Spring home, Mary and her family moved one final time to Clarksburg, MD.
Though retired, Mary always remained active in her Church, keeping busy with bible studies, craft activities, swimming and playing with her granddaughters.
Mary is survived by her loving son Teddy, daughter-in-law Jessie and granddaughters, Linda Mei-Lin and Lisa Mei-Xin.
In her extended family, she is survived in the U.S. by sister-in-law, Jennie Wu, nephew Arthur K. Wu (Carmen), niece Jade, two grandnieces, Stephanie Marlene Me-yueh Alviani (T.R.) and Kisch Kimberly Mei-ling Wu-Griffin Konold (Michael), great grandnephews, Jack Anthony Alviani, Max Colby Alviani, great grandniece Nora Eloise Konold, brother-in-law Tom Wu (Pansi) and niece Lillian, as well as sisters-in-law Lily Hellestoe and Annie Wu.
In Burma, she is survived by brother-in-law Father Joseph Norman Wu, sisters-in-law Terry Wu, Mary Wu, and many, many relatives and friends in Burma, Canada and China.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and her husband Edward Kin-Lee Wu.
Mary Liang Wu will be eternally remembered for her generosity of heart and soul. We miss her deeply, now and always. She was our family’s, both immediate and extended, staple.
A viewing and memorial service will be held at De Vol Funeral home in Gaithersburg, MD on Thursday, June 30 at 10:00 AM.
Internment will follow at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood MD.
