

Pete’s high school education was completed at Charleston High School in Charleston, WVA, followed by higher studies at Marshall University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Upper Iowa State University. He honorably served in the United States Army for six years. His military career was distinguished by three tours of duty in the Vietnam war and his role as a telecommunications specialist. Pete was instrumental in the development of critical information systems used by the Pentagon and Congress, foundational to what is known today as the internet. Following his military service, Pete transitioned to a successful career in the private sector, contributing significantly to companies such as Comten, MCI, IBM and Lockhead Martin. At IBM, he was recognized as a golden circle award winner and became a certified systems architect. A testament to his brilliant and devoted professional life.
Pete was a man of many interests, including woodworking, painting, golf, classic cars, traveling, being an active leader in Boy Scouts and Order of the Arrow, and in his later age, his most favorite, genealogy. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family embodying the roles of caring, loving, and responsible father and grandfather.
He is survived by his son, Robert Beatty, MD, his wife Rachel Beatty, APRN and his daughter Kathy Pitts and her husband Max Pitts. Pete was a loving “Pappy” to his 4 grandchildren Mary Harper and Dunning Pitts and Olivia and Isabella Beatty. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Macri and his brother James Beatty, as well as his brother and sister-in-law and their families.
Pete was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary A. Beatty and his parents Bernice and Thomas Beatty.
A service to honor Pete’s life will be held Thursday, November 14th at DeVol Funeral Home in Gaithersburg, MD at 10 am. Burial will be at 1:30 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, MD. His life was a testament to his thoughtful, attentive, and kind nature, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
