Richard Karl Hoefling passed away February 23, 2022 in Silver Spring, MD. Richard was born on February 10, 1943 in New York, New York, the son of Karl and Victoria (Werz) Hoefling. He graduated from Boston College, RPI in Troy, NY and UMD School of Law. He worked as an attorney for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the majority of his career. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Joan (Ahmuty) Hoefling and his sons, Jason (Kim) and Matthew (Allison). He is the loving Opa to Max, Simon, Madeline, Jack and Dylan.
Known to everyone as “Opa”, Richard touched so many lives. He was “the glue” for the Hoefling family and a kind and gentle soul. He loved doting on his “Joaniebird” and surprising her with gifts big and small. He and Joan spent their later years traveling all over the world and enjoying trips to Germany to connect his family with his German relatives. He shared his love for his German heritage with his family and loved nothing more than enjoying a spaten with his sons.
He loved watching BC sports and the Orioles but enjoyed nothing more than cheering on and coaching his grandchildren in their sports. He was their number one fan in sports and in life. He made each of his grandchildren feel like they were the only ones in the world, sharing unique connections with each of them. They will always remember their bike rides to the candy store, Capitals games, Monopoly, European adventures, his silly nicknames and so much more.
Dick’s life was filled with an abundance of pursuits - hiking, camping, fishing, swimming in the ocean and skiing. He nurtured his lawn and was vigilant about defending it from the dreaded turkey vultures. He had a unique fashion sense and loved a good meal.
He will be fondly remembered by the countless lives he touched. Please share your favorite memory of Opa.
