

Pat was born in Washington, D.C. and was the son of Thomas and Margaret Flaherty. He attended John Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. and was a United States Coast Guard reservist. He worked full time for various government agencies while attending evening classes at George Washington University to earn his bachelor’s degree. Pat retired as the Executive Assistant to the Chief Medical Director of the Veteran’s Administration.
After five years in Alexandria, Virginia, Pat and Mimi moved into their “forever” home in Bethesda where they spent the next 52 years raising their family. Pat is survived by his wife of 57 years, Miriam “Mimi” Flaherty, his three children, Kathleen Walsh, Mary (Paul) Riegert, and Michael (Mindy) Flaherty. Grandchildren; Kevin (Erin Hull) Walsh, Brandon (Emily) Walsh, Hunter Riegert, Kelly Riegert, and Michael Flaherty. Pat’s sisters Joyce (Vinny) McCarthy, Mary (predeceased Lloyd) Bayliss. Pat was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret “Peggy” (Bob) Long and Kathleen Flaherty.
Pat was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church growing up and joined St. Jane De Chantal Catholic Church when he started his family with Mimi. He was a third-degree Knights of Columbus and enjoyed many years of brotherhood. As a member of the Izaak Walton League, he loved fishing and skeet and trap shooting, especially with his son, Michael.
Pat loved his home, his hobbies (model boat building, photography, and gardening) and was an avid reader. He was a member of the Washington Ship Model Society and the Nautical Research Guild and in 1976, The Smithsonian Institute invited Pat (KM&M Model Boats) to participate in a special exhibit featuring his expert model boat building skills. Pat was also a proud Co-founder and Commodore of the Bethesda Yacht Club, a social non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the memory of Bethesda and raising funds for Children’s National Hospital Foundation in Washington D.C.
Pat loved a good meal and spending time with friends especially at Tastee Diner and Peter’s Carryout.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 4900 Strathmore Ave, Garrett Park on Friday, February 10, 2023, at 11:00am. A private inturment will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date.
