12 days after his 90th birthday - Feb 24, 2024.
Born in Salt Lake City, Tom was raised in Tooele, Utah until that winter of 1949 when his parents, Tom and Hazel Monserat decided the winters were just too cold and they moved to Whittier, CA and began farming vegetables. At 15, Tom was trucking the vegetables to the LA produce Market early mornings before school.
Tom had more than one profession; construction, truck driving, security administration, but the one he loved the most was being a Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff. Most of his good stories were about those years, often reminiscing with his old partner Harry who said that when Tom nicknamed him “Greek”, it stayed with him his entire career. Buying and selling cars with his friends, going to the auction, and finding the perfect motorhome were a few of his passions as well as doing two crosswords a day. Tom loved watching basketball; Lakers, Warriors, and all football, including the Rams, Chiefs, and the 49er’s.
Tom was a good neighbor and enjoyed sitting in the garage late afternoons with his friend Lon or walking Sadie around the neighborhood. As an only child, Tom had to adjust to being a part of Marty’s large family. Over the last few years, Tom enjoyed traveling with the Hibma in-laws to Alaska, the Mississippi and Columbia Rivers, and especially to the “Del” in San Diego.
Tom had a great sense of humor; loved a good joke and had many funny sayings which made us laugh often. He told his grandchildren the stories of his childhood in Utah; drinking the copper water from the stream on his dad’s farm which contributed to his good health; the rabbits they raised and sold as meat until bunnies became popular as pets; how cold their winters were that even his dog would not go with him on his early morning paper route; his Mom’s prized shrimp salad which he regretted never eating; and the time he was caught by the nuns in the apple tree behind the wall of the town’s Catholic convent.
Tom was loved as a husband, father, father-in law, brother-in law, uncle, grandpa, papa, and friend. He welcomed everyone. He along with Marty, often opened their home to extended family members. We were all blessed by Tom’s generous and kind heart. He had the ability to make everyone feel important.
Tom leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Marty and son Lance along with 13 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and four children, Michael in 2008, Robin in 2012, Duane in 2019 and Lori in 2023
We love you Tom, and we will all miss you.
