The Importance of a Sister

A sister is someone who loves you from the heart,
No matter how much you argue you cannot be drawn apart.
She is a joy that cannot be taken away,
Once she enters your life, she is there to stay.
A friend who helps you through difficult times,
Her comforting words are worth much more than dimes.
A partner who fills your life with laughs and smile,
These memories last for miles and miles.
When she is by your side, the world is filled with life,
When she is not around, your days are full of strife.
A sister is a blessing, who fills your heart with love,
She flies with you in life with the beauty of a dove.
A companion to whom you can express your feelings,
She doesn’t let you get bored at family dealings.
Whether you are having your ups or downs,
She always helps you with a smile and never frowns.
With a sister you cannot have a grudge,
She is as sweet as chocolate and as smooth as fudge.
Having a sister is not just a trend,
It is knowing you can always turn to her, your best friend.

Mom, I don't even know where to begin. Mom, you were always amazing. No matter what obstacles stood in your way, you always found a way to push through. Through good times and bad, you always kept a smile. You made me feel safe and secure. No matter the situation, you understood—life happens. You were always so welcoming and loving toward those you met. Even if someone had ill will, you still treated them kindly. That's something I try to embody every day. I'm going to miss your cooking. I'm even going to miss giving you a hard time about the raisins in the stuffing. I will work every day to make you proud. I love you, Mom, and I will miss hearing your voice.

The candy she loved to eat at all hours of the day or night. Even her grandbabies eat them…

I can remember when I first met Ms. Barbara. She welcomed me with a bright smile, a hug, and a charming Caribbean accent. She always had a positive disposition about life. No matter what was going on medically, she never allowed it to stop her. Her tenacity was very inspiring and admirable. 

One of my fondest memories was when she had a hospital stay a few years ago and she wasn't happy about the way the hospital food tasted. I went to one of my favorite restaurants and bought her an oxtail dinner with ginger beer (no alcohol of course). I remember leaving her a message stating  "It may not taste exactly like the food from home, but it's the closest I could get."  She called me right away to tell me that the doctor advised her not to eat the food, but she didn't want to be rude to me, so she had no choice but to eat it 🤣🤣🤣. We'd continue to have a great laugh about that moment for the next couple years. She will surely be missed.
