Marissa Sonaja Pogues

Marissa Sonaja Pogues, age 28, of Gardena, California passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024. Marissa was born in Gardena, CA. Born June 12, 1996 at Gardena Memorial Hospital to the parents of Cassandra and Maurice Pogues. Marissa was a vibrant, kind soul who touched the lives of all who knew her.

A graduate of King Drew Medical Magnet High School, Marissa had a passion for learning and a deep love for animals. Her dream was to become a veterinarian, a calling she felt from a young age. She had a special bond with animals, seeing them not just as pets but as companions deserving of love, care, and respect. Her pets over the years ranged from a turtle, bearded dragon, guinea pig, and a host of cats and dogs.

Marissa also worked for the United States Postal Service, where her warm smile and infectious laugh brightened the days of her colleagues and customers alike. Her ability to relate to others and her down-to-earth nature earned her many friendships. She had what many would call an "old soul," wise beyond her years, with a heart full of compassion.

In addition to her professional aspirations, Marissa was a lover of video games, spending countless hours immersed in virtual worlds where her competitive spirit and sharp mind shined. She loved to cook and watch crime shows. She was also devoted to her family and friends, always willing to lend a listening ear, share a laugh, or simply be present for those she loved.

Marissa is survived by her beloved family— mother Cassandra Blackmon, sister Sharice Anderson, nephew Chance Wills, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends—each of whom will forever remember her for her laughter, her empathy, and her gentle spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love that will never be forgotten.
