She was the 8th child of 9, born to Waldo and Jesse Gastelum who were 40 and 45 years old at the time. She grew up in Compton, first living at the brickyard where Waldo worked, and later on a small farm run by her family. She graduated from Compton JC, attending 11th and 12th grade there.
She married Frank Romo on April 13, 1952. They lived in Hawthorne and later in Torrance, and raised 3 sons; Steve, Jeff and Don. In the 1970's they built a home at Canyon Lake which they enjoyed on weekends for many years and then moved to full-time after Frank retired.
Vera led a very active life. She enjoyed working with the PTA, attending musicals, playing cards, bowling, golfing and playing tennis. She was very talented and loved crafts; she knitted, sewed, quilted, crocheted and painted (oil-paintings, porcelain dolls and china). She and Frank traveled the world visiting Mexico, Canada, Greece, Morocco, Turkey, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Vera was a friendly, kind, fun, happy soul. She will be greatly missed by her sons Steve (wife Pam), Jeff (wife Janita), and Don (wife Danese); by her grandchildren Nicole (husband Justin), Matt (wife Heather), Brittany (husband Chris), Brennan, Ryan (wife Jess), James (wife Mandy), Kacey (husband Chase), Trevor and Garrett; and by her great-grandchildren Sofie, Micah, Blake, Brody, Kyler and Aidan.
