

Richard Donald Blair, 91, formerly of Auburn and Port Byron, passed away Sunday morning, April 19, 2015 at his home in Gastonia, NC. Richard was a radioman in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on the USS Lexington and several other ships. He worked for New York Telephone Co. for 40 years and was also a self-employed electrician for many years.
Richard is survived by his wife, Alice Blair; children, Sally Scippo and Bradley (Linda) Blair; grandchildren, Annette Scippo, Jason (Michael) Scippo, Ryan (Corinne) Blair, Andrea Scippo, Renee (David) Giordano, and Matthew Blair; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Mabel Blair, and sister, Vera. Funeral services were held in Gastonia on April 25.
An avid baseball fan, Richard played fast-pitch softball for many years. He was a coach for Auburn Little League teams, including the traveling All Star Team, and served on the Board of Directors. He enjoyed hunting and especially enjoyed gardening. He was known for his roses and his vegetables found their way to countless kitchens. He later became a passionate golfer. He was a long time member of Highland Park Golf Club where he won several tournaments, had a hole in one, served on the Board for 16 years, and was a dedicated volunteer whenever needed. He was always there to help family and friends.
Richard greatly enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to visit the World War II Memorials in Washington D.C., thanks to the Knights of Columbus Operation Enduring Gratitude in 2012.
In March, Richard and Alice celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by family members.
