

Sarah Elizabeth (Smith) Rollins, 103, of Gastonia passed away peacefully on Friday December 18, 2020. Sarah is a lifelong resident of Gastonia. Sarah was born in Gastonia on July 25, 1917. Sarah was a nurse for over 20 years, but she is best known for her work in the Men’s Department at Belk’s Department Store. She had many repeat customers and she was a top salesperson. Sarah was an accomplished quilter and all her family has quilts she made as treasured keepsakes of her. Sarah was a lifelong Presbyterian Christian. Sarah saw many changes in her long life. She will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved her.
Sarah is the daughter of the late Sallie (Mc Arver) and Ernest Smith. Her husband, Fred Marshall Rollins, Sr. preceded her in death in 1985 after 49 years of marriage. Her son, Fred Marshall Rollins, Jr. also precedes her in death in 2005. Sarah has also lost three grandsons.
Left to cherish their fond memories of Sarah and to carry on her legacy are her daughters, Sherry Robinson (Stacy), Jean Piercy and Deanna Herlong (Vaughan). Sarah also leaves behind five grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Also grieving the loss of Sarah is her daughter-in-law, Shannon Scott.
A graveside service and committal will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday December 23, 2020 in the Myrtle Garden of Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends before the service beginning at 1:00 pm at Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia. Reverend Chris Vogado will offer words on encouragement and hope to those that gather to remember Sarah.
