

Troy went to Gastonia High School and graduated in 1954. After high school he attend Belmont Abby College and graduated in 1958. Troy married Dorothy (Dottie) Abernathy June 23, 1962. In 1973 they welcomed their only child, Crystal into the world. Troy began his career with Matthews Belk Department Store at age 15. He continued to work for Belk throughout his career serving as Department Manager, Store Manager, Vice President, and ultimately Executive Vice President and Supervising Partner of 42 stores in Eastern North Carolina. He retired from Belk in 2000 and started H&H Shoe Warehouse with a few close family and friends. Troy was involved in philanthropy throughout his life. He served on the boards of many civic organizations in Gastonia, Fayetteville, and Greenville. He was very supportive of his wife's involvement in Alpha Delta Kappa, a sorority for educators. After the death of his beloved wife Dottie, Troy moved to Matthews Glen Retirement Community in June of 2016. He enjoyed meeting other residents, activities, and the community. He met Marie Giles at Matthews Glenn and the two became fast friends and were inseparable until his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Dottie) Abernathy Howard; his 6 sisters, Margaret Spencer, Ruby Carpenter, Eloise Murphey, Vergie Nosil, Buford Haithcox, and Helen Howard; and 2 brothers Roy Howard and Varner Howard.
He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Crystal and Buddy Morrison of Lake Lure NC, and his special friend, Marie Giles of Matthews NC. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
