

Barry Eugene Caplen, age 74, was born in Houston, Texas, on November 9, 1946, to Monty Holland Caplen and Charles Selam Caplen. After graduating from Milby High School, he attended Sam Houston State University and graduated with a bachelor’s teaching degree in history. He taught history/social studies in Houston ISD for two years before transferring to Pasadena ISD, where he taught history/social studies at Queens Intermediate for 34 years.
He married Becky Robison on April 2, 1977, at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Pasadena, Texas. Together they raised three children. After his retirement from the school district, Barry worked part-time jobs at Space Center Houston and then for a brief time at the Pasadena YMCA before moving to Georgetown, Texas, where he lived for the last 12 years of his life. While in Georgetown, he worked part-time at HEB grocery store, his favorite post-teaching job. He worked there 10 years and left only when his health forced him to do so.
Barry was an avid sports fan, especially of the Houston Astros and Houston Texans. He was a trivia buff and had a remarkable talent for remembering baseball and football stats and dates.
Barry was a parishioner at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Georgetown, Texas.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Monty and Charles Caplen. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Becky Caplen and his three children: Lauren Caplen of Deer Park, Texas; Russell “Rusty” Caplen of Georgetown, Texas; and Vanessa Caplen Bernard and her husband Tim; as well as numerous aunts and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, Barry requested that memorials be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, in honor of his late father.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Eugene Smart, Richard Morgan, Jay Trainor, Herman d'Hart, Wayne Wheeler and Julian Bucher.
Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 4, 2021 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Georgetown, Texas.
