Betty Kuhn Johnson Craig of Georgetown died on April 10, 2012, at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Round Rock, after a brief illness. Betty was born September 20, 1947, in Taylor, to Charles and Bess Kuhn. She graduated from Hutto High School in 1965, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas and a Master’s Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. Among other honors, Betty was Valedictorian of her Senior Class at Hutto, named Miss Hutto High and was Regional Tennis Champ while in high school. Betty began her teaching career in the 1970s at Pearce Junior High School in Austin. She continued teaching when she moved to Georgetown, where she taught senior English at Georgetown High School. Upon retirement, Betty volunteered to teach English as a Second Language for the Williamson County Literacy Council. When asked her greatest accomplishment, she answered that she found most satisfaction and a high calling helping immigrants live successful, productive lives in this country. She loved to camp, travel, read and work in the yard, creating a year-round oasis in the back garden of her Georgetown home. In addition, she and Randall traveled extensively in Mexico, immersing themselves in the culture and language of that country. She possessed great courage, exhibited a peaceful nature and had a good sense of humor with a dry wit throughout her life and especially during her illness. All her friends and family can attest to Betty’s highly competitive nature. She loved to play board games, often beating her grandchildren, to their dismay. Betty will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. Betty’s first marriage was to Jimmy Ray Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Randall D. Craig; two sons from her first marriage, Scott Johnson, wife Melanie of Georgetown and Jimmy Ray Johnson, Jr., fiancée Jaime King of Round Rock; and step-daughter Cherry Lee, husband Jason of Austin; and five grandchildren, Lincoln Johnson, Nate Johnson, Madison Lee, Katlin Lee, and Lillian Lee; and her sister Pat Walker of New Mexico, brothers Joaquin Kuhn of Canada, and Stephen Kuhn of Lockhart. A celebration of Betty’s life and her faith will be held at 5:00 pm on Friday, April 13, 2012 in First United Methodist Church, 410 E. University Ave in Georgetown. A reception will follow the service. Memorial Contributions in Betty’s memory should be made to Williamson County Retired Teachers’ Scholarship Fund, c/o WCRTA Treasurer, 1812 White Indigo Trail,Round Rock, Texas 78665-2818.
