February 27, 1935 – August 1, 2025
Fred Calvin Stone, 90, of Round Rock, Texas, passed away on Friday, August 1st at 4:11 p.m. He was born on February 27, 1935, in Vernon, Texas, to Frank Stone and Wretha Maude Calhoun Stone. Though his full name was Fred Calvin Stone, he went by Calvin throughout his life. His grandfather's name was Decatur Stone.
He moved to Odessa, Texas, at a very young age, and the connection with that city became a defining part of his life. He was preceded in death by his older half-sister Rosalie, his identical twin brother Alvin, and his son Chris. Rosalie’s husband, Cleo (Uncle Cleo), also played a significant role in Calvin’s life. Uncle Cleo worked in the family’s cabinet shop alongside Calvin’s father and helped shape Calvin’s early appreciation for craftsmanship and hard work. He also had a younger sister, Glenna.
Calvin was an avid baseball player in his youth and went on to play semi-pro ball. He led one of his high school teams to the state championship and remained a lifelong fan of the game. One of his greatest joys later in life was watching his favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves, win the World Series in 2021. A proud left-hander, Calvin delighted in noticing others who shared that trait.
He served in the United States Naval Reserves for eight years. He was called onto a ship several times for training and was very proud of his service.
Calvin earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of North Texas and began his career as a sixth-grade teacher in Odessa. His leadership and love of education carried him forward into roles as a high school baseball coach, high school principal, and eventually superintendent in the communities of Rochester and Hubbard, Texas.
He married Brenda Joyce Belcher, and together they had four children: Randy, Chris, Scott, and Steven. After their marriage ended, Calvin spent most of his later life as a single man. In his later years, he often said he truly enjoyed the independence and simplicity of living on his own.
Calvin inherited a strong sense of craftsmanship from his father’s cabinet shop, which stayed with him throughout his life. After retiring from education, he embarked on a second successful career, owning and operating three Kettle restaurants located in LaPorte, Baytown, and Kemah. He later worked in property management, as a handyman, and eventually as a real estate agent—always staying active, resourceful, and connected to people.
Calvin also had a spiritual side. As a high schooler, he was drawn to church services and enjoyed hearing about the Bible. At the age of 27, he made the decision to be baptized. Throughout his life, Calvin enjoyed Christian fellowship with other brothers and sisters in Christ. After his retirement, he very much enjoyed attending Bible studies on Tuesday and Friday nights. Oftentimes, when Calvin was sitting at the dinner table, he would say, “The Lord has been good to me, and the Lord is taking care of me.”
Over the years, Calvin lived in many places across Texas, including Odessa, Garwood, Iraan, Rochester, Hubbard, LaPorte, Kingsland, Bastrop, and Round Rock.
He is survived by his sons: Randy (and wife Aileen), Scott (and wife Sarah), and Steven (and wife Queena); as well as his daughter-in-law Holli. He was a proud grandfather to Ricky (and wife Natalie) and Allyssa (and husband John), children of Randy and Aileen; Priscilla and Hannah (children of Scott and Sarah); and Lauryn and Lyla (children of Chris and Holli). Calvin was also a great-grandfather to Mayleen, daughter of Ricky and Natalie.
A visitation for Calvin will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, TX 78628. A committal will be held Thursday, August 7, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Odessa, Texas
