David R. Barnett, 68, of Georgetown, Texas passed away peacefully on January 29, 2009 with his family by his side. David was born in Manila, Philippines on July 15, 1940 where he lived until he was 12 years old. At 18 months old, his family, along with 3700 American and allied civilians, was held captive by the Japanese occupation during the war. They were interred at Santo Tomas Internment Camp until the American forces liberated the Philippines 4 years later. David graduated from UCLA Berkley and spent his career with the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors in several positions in the Field Organization around the country, the last being a Zone Manager in Kansas City, Missouri, where he retired after 30 years of service. He and Marilyn relocated to Georgetown, Texas, where they built a house on the 11th tee at Berry Creek Country Club. David served in the United States Army, graduating from OCS in 1964. He served in Vietnam with the First Infantry Division, ending his military service as a First Lieutenant. David was a proud American and a strong supporter of our country’s armed forces. Recently, he assisted a friend’s effort by helping to collect donations to purchase phone-calling cards for our military personnel overseas. David was a generous, caring person who was quick to help anyone in need at any time. He was an avid golfer and played several times a week with his friends. He had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. His email messages with friends were legendary. He loved all animals, and although he was an excellent marksman and enjoyed target shooting, he could never take an animal’s life by hunting. His complete devotion to his rescue shelter dog; Annie, was apparent to all who knew him. David made a big social event out of their daily golf cart outings during Annie’s runs, stopping to visit with anyone they met along the way, whether a friend or stranger. David is survived by his wife of 32 years, Marilyn Barnett, daughter Angela Coleman and husband Rob, three grandchildren; Melissa, Chad, and Jeff, one great-grandson; Colin. He is also survived by his two brothers; Larry and wife Barbara and Rick and wife Bonnie all of Southern California. David also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; Stuart and Irene Barnett. David will be greatly missed by all who knew him. David’s family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 on Monday, February 2, 2009 in Gabriels Funeral Chapel in Georgetown. A service celebrating David’s life will be held at 10:00 am in the chapel of the funeral home on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. The family suggests memorial contributions in David’s name to the Humane Society of Williamson County, 10930 Crystal Falls Parkway, Leander, TX. 78641.
