On Monday March 1, 2011 in Georgetown, Texas, Dixie Irene Ewing left us at age 96 as she was approaching her 97th birthday. She was born on April 27, 1914 in Creola, Alabama, and as an international traveler and adventurer, she has influenced and enriched hundreds of lives with her zest for living.
Her special gift was inspiring children and youth wherever she lived while traveling with her husband, Jack. During their life in Panama, she organized a first Girl Scout troop, later serving as the Girl Scout ambassador from Panama to the international meeting of Girl Scouts in New York. Another favorite country abroad was Thailand where she lived in Bangkok. She never forgot the graciousness and friendliness of the people in this beautiful country where she was an Art Teacher at the Yanghee American School. Following Jack’s death, her love of youth stimulated her to become a Dorm Mother at Contessa West near the University of Texas campus. Two of her previous students have visited her often throughout the years.
Many remember Dixie for her love of art antiquities as well as her entertaining of dignitaries. The grace with which she was an exceptional and hospitable hostess, accompanied by the laughter and humor she injected into any celebration or event, created fun for all in her presence. Some will also remember her love of the arts and her early career work at Theater Inc in Houston, TX as a costume and set designer. Although Dixie loved music, playing the piano, and cooking, the thing that she most loved was being known as “Mom” and “Grandma” to her children and family.
Dixie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack Colvin Ewing, Sr., and her son, Jack C. Ewing, Jr., her brother, Melborne Robertson and wife, Margaret Craven Robertson, and her three sisters, Virginia “Sister” Robertson and husband, Garnet Hayes, Dorothy Robertson and husband, Leo Hilburn, Ladona Robertson and husband, Jim Holder.
Surviving her is a son, Joe L. Ewing and wife Judith Coats Ewing of Santa Barbara, CA; her son’s widow, Jerri Ewing of Houston, TX; her brother, Charles (Buddy) Robertson and wife Betty Gilmore Robertson; her grandchildren, Daphne and Tony Jurries, Mandy and Dave Shepard, Terri and James Klehm, Robert Ewing, Derrik and Barbara Ewing, Bilinda Ewing, Jana and Scott Kent; her great-grandchildren, Ryan Jurries, Miranda and Matt Sands, Nicholas Shepard, Brandon and Shelby Klehm, Robert Ewing Jr., Amanda Worley, Allison Fritts, Audrey Fritts, Lauren Mantini, Jack Carter and Emily Grace Kent; her great-great-grandchildren, Seth and Shane Sands, Troy Worley; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends scattered all over the world.
A private ceremony in celebration of her life will be held Saturday March 12, 2011 by family members.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Girl Scouts of America, or to a charity or church of choice.
Arrangements by Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628 (512)863-2564.
