Florence and Novella Moore became the proud parents of their first born, Ethel Mae Moore on May 5, 1924. She married John Rector and later in life united in marriage to James Moore. Her marriage to James Moore led her to a military stay in Okinawa for several years which became a wonderful experience of culture, friendships and gratitude. No children were born from either union of marriage.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Moore, brothers Florence and Riley and a sister Sandra Kay.
Ethel grew up in a family dedicated to serving God. Accepting Christ at an early age and having strong desire to achieve, graduated from Marshall-Carver High School in Georgetown, Texas. With a strong desire to become a Home Economics teacher, had her goal deferred and went to Beauty College for Cosmetology: thus Mae’s Beauty Shop became one of the businesses in Georgetown many young girls lined up for, especially during the holidays.
Ethel’s dedication to serve began as a Bible student and Usher at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. Later, she moved home to Georgetown, Texas, becoming united with her church, Friendly Will Missionary Baptist, her faithful passion and a living testimony to God. She served as Church Secretary, Youth Director, VBS Coordinator, Women’s Mission President, Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, Holiday Program Coordinator, Community Resource Person and strong advocate for all.
Her community was an essential part of her life. She served on many committees, Georgetown Cultural Citizen Memorial Association’s president, coordinating the Juneteenth, Black History Events and overseeing the Willie Hall Center as well as her other passion, The Afro-American “Shotgun House Museum”. From contributions were to Habitant Humanities, United Way, Handcrafts Unlimited and as well as a recipient of many awards. Her life’s legacy will always be embraced.
Some knew her as Ethel, many Aunt Mae, Sis. Moore and yet sisters just call her Mae. She had many names and many titles, but most of all she was a servant of God and goodwill to all. Wherever there was a need outside or inside of her family, she was available. Her strong tradition and encouragement for family has led to an over sixty year tradition, “Celebrating Christmas at the Family House”. Her legacy will always be with all of us. Everyone has a “I remember when”, segment in their lives that involved her.
Ethel leaves in God’s care her sisters, Florida Pettus, Dorthula Perry and Minnie Jefferson; caregiver niece, Paulette Taylor; and other nieces, nephews, adorable cousins, family members and friends.
