He was a truck driver from the age of 16, Army Reservist, outdoors man, and an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
To many he was a larger than life rough and tough no nonsense Texan, but in the comfort of his family he was known as a vulnerable teddy bear who wore his heart on his sleeve and could be brought to tears at the thought of someone he loved hurting. If you were younger than him you were "son", if you were older you were "sir". You never left his home without a "be careful" with a sincerity that let you know he meant it.
He shared a rare love with his wife whom he met at 9 years old. He rarely spoke of his feelings for her that he didn't get a tear in his eye and cited his love for her as the one consistency in his life.
His most prized title was as "Papa" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He routinely lavished them with made to order breakfast banquets. If a rouge parent failed to bring one of his "babies" to visit timely, a stern phone call soon delivered them to his door so he could cater to them.
He was blessed to have spent his last years in retirement where his youngest grandchildren were a constant fixture. Schedules were ruled by "Tom and Jerry", his grandchildren being the only people who could make him change a channel, they never missed a showing. His granddaughter likened their relationship to the characters, "Me and Papa are just like Tom and Jerry, we "fight" all time, but we still love each other."
He had much love for his family. He never let an opportunity go by without letting someone know that he loved them. He was a good provider, and protector of all that he held dear. His family is comforted by his recent acceptance of Christ as his Lord and Savior.
He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 43 years, Betty West of Leander; Stepmother, Ruby Floyd of Liberty Hill; Sister, Opal Lambert and husband, Jack of Liberty Hill; brother John West and wife, Judy of De Leon; Sister, Pauline Collins and husband Richard of Liberty Hill; Children:Sherry McCutcheon of Austin, Terry Traugott of Austin, Chip Traugott of Del Valle, Gary Traugott of Leander, Doug West of Leander, Denise Cushing and husband Tray of Liberty Hill, 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
