James Javurek passed into the loving hands of Jesus on October 13, 2010 following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Jim was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 24, 1921 to Frank and Helen (Formanek) Javurek, who immigrated to America from Czechoslovakia. His brother George as well as his sisters Anna and Bessie preceded Jim in death. His sister, Marie Vyskocil, still resides in Wisconsin. Jim married Frances Zelenka on September 18, 1943 shortly after enlisting in the U.S. Army. This lifetime union with Fran produced four daughters (with husbands): Karen (Scott Simon); Kathy (Russ Lyday); Jami (Ron Dewees); and Jillbeth (Sherman Barber).
Jim considered his children to be his wealth, to be prized above all material things. And, by being blessed with four doting daughters and a loving wife, he was treated as genuine royalty by his family. Eventually 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren joined Jim’s kingdom. They will all truly miss Granddad Jim.
Jim loved America, and he was proud to be called an American patriot. He served his country 27 years as a member of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force culminating in retirement as a Lt Col on 1970. As an Air Force navigator aboard B-36 and B-52 aircrafts, Jim was part of the first line of defense during the Cold War. He later proudly served in the Southeast Asia conflict. Following retirement, he began to purchase rental houses, which he maintained and managed personally until ill health slowed him down.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Crestview Baptist Church in Georgetown, Texas with Reverend Jack Phelps officiating. A military graveside service will follow at 3:00 P.M. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
Jim’s family is most grateful for the excellent treatment provided to Jim over the past two years at the William R. Courtney Texas Veterans Home in Temple, Texas. The nurses and administrators are truly God’s servants.
Jim was a freemason for more than 50 years, and he was an active Ben Hur Shriner for many years. He was very proud of the work the hospitals in Houston and Galveston have done to make children live better. Please submit any donations to the hospitals in his name to the: Ben Hur Center, 7811 Rockwood Lane, Austin, Texas 78757.
Arrangements by Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628 (512)863-2564.
