Joyce was born the youngest of six in San Angelo, Texas to Jesse and Ida Smith on August 12, 1946. She went to high school at Permian High in Odessa, Texas and later graduated at A.C. Jones High School in Beeville, Texas in 1964. While in Odessa, she also took evening college classes in Drama, Fencing, English, and French.
She worked as a dispatcher, secretary, and flight controller for Hillsboro Aviation in Hillsboro, Oregon and as a model for Powers Modeling Agency for a number of years. After returning to Beeville, Texas she became the secretary to the president of Bee County College.
On April 29, 1967 she married Thomas Dunn in Beeville, Texas. And later, moving to Durango, Colorado, she worked as a dispatcher for the Durango Police Department. Later, back in Beeville, Texas Tommy and Joyce had their own business, and she worked as secretary, bookkeeper, and office manager for Tommy Dunn Bulldozing.
They had three children in their 49 years of marriage, and because of her strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, she took on the job of “Mom” and saw to it that their boys were brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. She was an active faithful member of the church of Christ all her life and did her best to walk in the steps of her Savior.
Besides working in the church, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and crocheting. She crafted inspirational bookmarks for other cancer patients, encouraging and comforting them with her own experience as a cancer patient.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Ida Smith, and her brothers, Jesse “Beaver” Smith and Joseph Smith.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Thomas Dunn of Santa Anna, Texas. Her brothers Ollie “Buddy” Smith of Beeville, Texas and Kenneth Smith of Cornelius, Oregon, and her sister Carol “Barbara” Smith of Santa Anna, Texas.
