Margie Jane McCabe Scott, 89, resident of Georgetown, Texas, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022. Margie was vivacious, adventurous, and bold, and was devoted to her family and her many friends. She was born in Seabrook on July 28, 1932 to Alberta Measles McCabe and Joseph McCabe, who sadly died when Margie was only four years old. As a young child Margie endured the hardships of the Great Depression, but despite the challenges of those years she always looked to the future and she worked hard to meet her goals throughout her life. She graduated from Webster High School, where she was involved in theater and where she made lifelong friends who shared her love of the performing arts. In 1949 she married Wilbur Wetzel, with whom she had three daughters: Karen Elizabeth, Diane Marie, and Bonnie Gail. She attended college at the University of Houston while balancing motherhood, and later earned her master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. In the early 1970’s, Margie divorced and she continued to care for her family in San Antonio while pursuing her profession. She had a long, successful career in education as a speech language pathologist in the Northeast School District and later worked as a diagnostician traveling throughout the state. Margie was an intellectual person and she was passionate about education. She loved to read -- a gift she passed on to her children and grandchildren-- and she enjoyed staying informed about current events and world affairs. Like her sister Frances, she had excellent taste and a natural flair for interior design. She was always popular and well-liked, and had a great sense of humor.
In 1992 Margie married the love of her life, Barry Scott, and they enjoyed 30 years of each other’s love and company. Margie adored Barry and found a real soulmate in him, and she was always very proud of his great talent as an artist. Together they enjoyed the visual and performing arts and traveled the world, from Rome and Tuscany to Sedona and New York City (where they saw as many Broadway shows as they could). They lived in San Antonio for several years before relocating to Sun City, Texas, where they lived for 17 years, and then moved to the Wesleyan in Georgetown.
Margie was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother Joseph II, her sister Frances, and her brother William Hanley. She is survived by her husband, Barry; her daughters Karen (Alfredo Alarcon), Diane, and Bonnie (Cecil Rivera); her grandchildren Angela, Sara (Tad Mora), Monica, and Andy; her great-grandchildren Aidan and Luke; her nieces and nephews, Kathy, Brian, Eddy, Mitchell, Michael, Sandra, and Frances; and many extended relatives. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A vigil will be held on Friday, August 5, at 6pm, and funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 6, at 11am at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in Andice, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Margie’s memory to an organization that supports education and child welfare, or animal safety and welfare.
