Marjorie Dorroh Allen, 93, passed away in Georgetown on February 25, 2025, after a long struggle with heart disease.
Marjorie was greatly loved and respected by her former students, First Baptist friends, and her family. She was an amazing kindergarten teacher and was always happy to reunite with former students. She taught English as a second language for many years. She loved to play the piano, especially for the Special Education Sunday School class at First Baptist, Georgetown. She was a prolific correspondent to family and friends and never forgot a birthday!
Marjorie grew up in Leander, Texas where in high school she loved to play volleyball. She attended Baylor University where she developed lifelong friendships. She met her true love Bob Allen there, and the romance continued for more than 50 years! They graduated from Baylor in 1953.
Bob’s naval career took them to exciting places, such as San Diego, California and Guantanamo, Cuba. Their son David was born in Cuba. After the Navy, Bob took a job with Pan Am Airlines in Guatemala City, Guatemala. They made lifelong friends with Clark and Sarah Scanlon and Bill and True Johnson there. Their daughter Jean was born there, as well. They moved back to the States, settling in Houston, where George was born. They finally returned to Austin, and Marjorie began teaching preschool at St. Andrews. They attended First Methodist Austin, where they made lifelong friends with George and Ruth Randolph.
Being longtime Baylor fans, the family loved Baylor sports, and attended Baylor Homecoming annually to see the parade, bonfire and other festivities. There were big get-togethers at Bonnie Hoge’s, Marjorie’s only sister. Trips to the Texas coast included Rockport for crabbing, and Lake Jackson to visit her brother George and his family.
Marjorie and Bob moved to Cedar Park in 1972 and joined Pond Springs Baptist Church and made many dear friends there. Marj taught Kindergarten at Briar Patch Children’s Center for many years.
After Bob’s retirement, Bob and Marj settled in Georgetown. Marj taught kindergarten at Rabbit Hill Children’s Center. Bob and Marj joined First Baptist Church. They taught literacy classes and Marj was active in the children’s music ministry. Now 40 years later, her latest music ministry has been playing hymns on the piano for the Special Education Sunday School Class at First Baptist – they filled her heart with joy! She enjoyed her monthly meetings with Women on Mission and Women’s Study Club where she appreciated inspirational topics and great friends. She had wonderful neighbors, especially Larry and Marti Hurtado, who gave her tender loving care in her later years. Special thanks to Luci Wharton, who has cared tirelessly for Marj over the last few years.
Marjorie’s Dorroh side of the family met every July at Valentine Lodge on Lake LBJ for over 50 years – catching up with family spread from Canada, Tennessee, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Bessie Dorroh, brother George Dorroh and sister Bonnie Hoge, husband Bob Allen and eldest son, David Allen.
She is survived by her daughter Jean Solana, her husband Pete, grandson Peter and his wife Silvia, granddaughter Christine and her husband Brent Walrath, and four great grandchildren: Joseph and Julia Solana, and Deacon and Wyatt Walrath. She is also survived by her son George, granddaughter Emily Fox and her husband Randy Fox, grandson Drew Allen, and great grandchildren Knox and River Fox.
Open visitation will be held Saturday, March 1st from 10-11 am at First Baptist Church, Georgetown, followed by a funeral service to celebrate her life at 11 am. A luncheon will be served for family. Her body will be laid to rest following the service at 2:30 pm in Hamilton Texas at the IOOF Cemetery on North 281.
