Roberta graduated from McCallum High School in Austin and worked for both the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Highway Department. She worked as a stay-at-home mother when her children were small. Roberta was a life-long Baptist and a person of faith. She served in the church as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher for many years, with 4th grade children being her favorite. She also volunteered at several area hospitals and a school library as her faith led her in the service of others.
By her example, Roberta demonstrated the strength to support and comfort others, even when it was difficult. In times of illness, grief, and loss, she was often the first person to arrive and assist for as long as she was needed. Circumstances that would make others uncomfortable allowed her to shine and manifest her God-given talents of practicality, resourcefulness, and empathy.
Roberta was predeceased by her parents, Emit and Vernie Thames; siblings Raymond Thames, Reigh Thames, Kenneth Thames, Dorothy Chard, and Virginia Oliver; and her beloved husband Joseph E. Steadham. She is survived by her daughter Amy Mandaville and son-in-law Kevin Mandaville; her son Allen Steadham and daughter-in-law Angel Steadham, and grandchildren Adam Steadham, Jonavinne Steadham, and Jeyli Steadham; brothers Roland Thames and Melvin Thames, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank Palmer Woods at North Austin for their outstanding care over the years.
Roberta will be laid to rest at a later date.
