She was born September 9, 1926, in Gore, Oklahoma, the first child of Reece Everett Meeker and Clara Johnson Meeker. She had three siblings: Reece Everett, Jr; Mary Francis, and Georgie Carol. She was variously named Sister by her family, Susy when signing a note painting, Queen Bee by our dad, Mom by her children, Aunt Susy by her nieces and nephews and MawMaw by her grandchildren. In her later years her caregivers all called her Miss Sue with much caring and respect.
She spent her life as a child, sister, wife, grocery checker, mother, grandmother, bible school teacher, piano player, high school trombone player, artist, church singer, neighbor, gardener, avid reader, writer of journals, traveler, watcher of old movies, and most of all, a faithful child of God and Christian. Whatever she did was filtered through her sweet spirit and gentle nature.
Sue attended public schools and graduated from Duncan High School in 1944. She then attended two years at Freed Hardeman College. After World War II was over, she married her long-time sweetheart Bill Cofield. Thus began a long career of moving up and down the country in the service of Transcontinental Gas Pipeline. They lived in many homes from New Jersey to Texas and attended the carious Churches of Christ in those communities. Eventually settling in Houston, Texas for 36 years and then retiring to Georgetown, Texas for the next 29 years.
Bill passed in 2003 and Sue remained at home until it was determined it was best for her to live with family. As she aged she developed Alzheimer’s Dementia which greatly affected her quality of life. In her final months she resided in residential care.
Sue and Bill had a long and happy marriage of 53 years resulting in three children. At Sue’s passing there are 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Sue is predeceased by her loving husband, Bill Cofield; her parents Reece Meeker and Clara Mae Johnson meeker; and her siblings Reece Meeker, Jr., and Mary Frances McDaniel. She is survived by her sister Georgie Meeker Garrison, and three children, Linda Cofield Evans and son-in-law Robert Evans; Connie Nell Morales and son-in-law Stephen Morales and son William Walter Cofield, Jr. and daughter-in-law Christie Whaley Cofield. Grandchildren are Kristen Brooks, Brian Evans, Haley Cofield, Heath Cofield, Chelsea, Shayne Cofield, Lance Cofield, Sommer Cofield. Great-Grandchildren are Declan Evans, James Cofield and Chelsea Garrett.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, January 19, 2022 from 1:00pm to 2:00 pm at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 pm at the Granger Cemetery in Granger, Texas.
