Ruth Rankin MacKinnon, 91, of Glace Bay, NS, passed into the presence of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on June 13, 2021 at the Glace Bay General Hospital, surrounded by members of her loving family. Born in Glace Bay, NS, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Edith (MacKenzie) MacVicar. Graduating from Glace Bay High School and Provincial Normal College in Truro, she taught for a number of years at Central School before marrying and starting her family.
Ruth was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Formerly a member of Knox United Church, in 2002 she was baptized and became a member of Faith Baptist Church. She loved reading, studying and memorizing the Bible and was always so happy to share the love of Jesus, finding many opportunities to do so. Prayer was another big component of her faith. She was wonderfully loving and nurturing to all of her loved ones, always looking for ways to bless and serve them. In her younger years she was active in volunteer service in the community, including working at the Glace Bay Food Bank, canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society and participating in the Each One Teach One program. Ruth and her husband Howard were generous supporters of many charities. She was a very talented gardener and the beautiful grounds of her property reflected her efforts. Ruth was a skilled cook and baker and family visitors were greeted with her famous fish chowder, tea biscuits, chocolate chip cookies and other special meals and treats. She celebrated her family’s accomplishments with great joy, always encouraging them in their interests and especially enjoyed ‘mini-concerts’ where her grandchildren displayed their singing, dancing and musical talents.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by husband Howard, sister Sarah, brothers Eric, William, James, and Donald. She is survived by sons Howard (Jane Anne), Eric (Pauline), sister Audrey (Michael) Butler, sisters-in-law May MacDonald and Susanne MacVicar, grandchildren Amy (Steve) Day, Ashley (Chad) Quist, Alec (Tyria) MacKinnon, Laura MacKinnon, Lianne (Caleb) Settle, Angela (Alex) Pattison, and Heather MacKinnon as well as six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Grand Lake Road, Cape Breton. Memorial Service will be scheduled for a later date due to current gathering restrictions. Donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to the Gideons, Canadian Bible Society, Faith Baptist Church, or to the charity of your choice. Thank you to all health care personnel and others who helped provide care and comfort for Ruth as her earthly days drew to a close. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.” (John 11:25-26).
