Ed was born on October 20, 1942, at home in North Kansas City, Missouri. He was the youngest of four children born to Delbert and Pauline McKown. Ed was a Northland resident his whole life.
Ed attended North Kansas City High School and joined the U.S. Air Force in April of 1960. He attended basic training at Lackland AFB in Texas where he trained to be a Personnel Specialist, focusing on leadership and management. Ed received a Good Conduct Medal in 1963, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award in 1964. He was honorably discharged in April of 1964.
Following his discharge from the U.S. Air Force, he got the opportunity to work in the concrete flatwork business where he became an accomplished cement finisher. He enjoyed it so much; he went on to run his own residential flat work construction company. He worked with many local builders operating primarily north of the river. One cold winter, Ed sought indoor work and began to help renovate the In-A-Tub restaurant on North Oak in Kansas City. He never returned to concrete work. Instead, he stayed at In-A-Tub for the next 20 years until he officially retired in August of 2020.
Ed was an avid sports fan. He loved all sports, particularly the Chiefs, Royals, golf and motorsports of any kind. When not attending in person, he made a day of flipping channels to catch games, matches, and races. His favorite sports were those of his grandchildren. He attended many of their games and events including kart racing, football, basketball and hockey. He was their biggest fan.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Pauline McKown; sister, Betty Macken, and brothers, Ray and Bob McKown.
He will be greatly missed and remembered by daughter, Nicole (Steve) Blow; son, Adam (Cassaundra) McKown; 6 grandchildren, Bailey McKown, Tyler McKown, Casie Mally, Alex Blow, Luc Blow, Traizen McKown, and 6 great grandchildren.
A Graveside Celebration of Life will be 2 PM Friday October 21, 2022, in White Chapel Cemetery with a memorial visitation from 1-2 PM Friday at the White Chapel Funeral Home.
