Born in Galesburg, IL, to Lester H. Ryon and Irene L. Doherty, Bud was a graduate of Smithville High School. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Jo Ann Ryon (Sheble); his daughters, Kristy Vetter (Mike), and Mary Kaye Cobb (Don); and his sister, Charlene Rundstrom (Bill). Bud’s legacy continues through his grandchildren: Ellen Casey (Justin), Mathew Vetter (Jordan), Jenna Nuss (Todd), James Cobb (Paige), and Austin Cobb. He is also cherished by eight great-grandchildren—Natalie, Taylor, Grant, Natalia, Ryon, Turner, Clark, and Sloane. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James William Ryon, and his son, Lester H. Ryon (Jan).
Bud spent his career in the steel industry, contributing his talents to Armco Steel, Carter Waters, and Aylward Pro Construction. Beyond his professional life, Bud’s passion for history made him a fixture at Union Station. As a dedicated volunteer, he brought history to life for countless visitors. His commitment was recognized with the Bronze President’s Lifetime Award, honoring his "spirit, time, and talent" in maintaining the Station as a world-class destination.
Bud treasured time spent with his family especially at family celebrations and holidays. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and uncle. Bud enjoyed
tennis, basketball, football and baseball, history and taking pictures of family, friends and nature. He loved talking sports or telling a story to anyone who would listen. Bud will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
