I'd like to share two online  remembrances from Jim's life.

First a YouTube video recorded December 3, 2016 at the Parkville VFW Hall's Saturday breakfast. Jim me up with fellow vet Gene Donnley and they discuss several topics - Ted Williams and service in  Korea. Second - an online album of images from Jim's time in the Primrose Retirement Community -mainly 2010 to 2017.  The photos of Washington DC landmarks were made during an Honor Flight in 2011 when Jim's good friend Steve Bindseil accompanied Jim on the flight and served as his escort for the long day of touring Washington DC. Jim loved trips out of Primrose and  went on all the trips the Primrose bus made till  his medical conditions kept him in closer quarters. 

 

Will never forget our interview at the VFW regarding service in Korea. Being from Boston and a big Ted Williams fan I was amazed hearing your stories of being in same squadron in Korea. Your reward in heaven will be great my friend and patriot.

It was my privilege to know Sgt. Jim Myers for the past eight years - he was a neighbor of my mom's at the Primrose Retirement Community.  Jim and I shared many meals -typically  biscuits and gravy on Saturday at Primrose or breakfast at the Parkville VFW Hall - also a Saturday ritual,    He enjoyed meeting fellow vets there and always came away with something to talk about later.  We often went to the VFW  accompanied by another Primrose resident,  Roscoe Shipley.  

Jim was sharp and inquisitive - well informed on a wide range of topics and he peppered me with more questions than I could answer.   His supply of jokes and quips seemed bottomless - at least he still came up with new ones over the course of our time together -and there were a few repeats. 

He was proud of his Marine Corps service in Korea.   I'm glad he was able to take part in the Honor Flight program and other veteran's activities.  He looked forward to the HyVee Veteran's Day breakfast every year,  escorted by his good friend Steve Binsteil.  He attended several flag raising ceremonies at the Lake Waukomis Fourth of July event.  Man of many hats - he had one for every occasion but preferred his VFW cap for any event related to his USMC days.  

We're losing our Korean War vets day by day and I was honored to know Sgt. James Myers, USMC.  

Uncle Bud played a significant role in our lives. The weeks my brother Mike, sister Penny, and I would spend in KC each summer visiting Grandma and Grandpa Myers were made ever more special because of Bud's interactions. He always chose to live each day to its fullest. No grass grew under his feet. Home from work, quick bite to eat, then out on the town. That seemed to be his routine every day. The many rides we took sitting on the top of the backseat of his white TR3, then his red TR4 were very exciting. I remember examining the Chinese rifle he brought back from the Korean war. I also tried on his Marine dress uniform many times. Bud was such a prankster. One such "trick" was to have us kids brace up a small cardboard box with a stick, tie a string to the stick, put some seeds or corn under the box and then lay flat on the ground a few yards away with the string in our  hands. We would wait for a bird to hop under the box in hopes of pulling the stick out and catch the bird. Bud would keep telling us to be patient. I'm presuming he got a good chuckle watching us mighty hunters. We never caught a bird!

He will now join his Mom and Dad and his favorite cat, Zorro, in heaven. St. Pete, be careful, Bud may just play one of his harmless pranks on you :-)

Semper Fi

So glad to have had Uncle Bud in my life for so long.  He was always so much fun when I  spent the summer week or more in Kansas City.  His sense of humor always kept me on my toes.  His memory right up until the end was amazing - he would ask about my children and even remembered to ask about grandchildren. How he remembered so much, I will never know.  His love of country and service to our country is to be always remembered and carried forward.  His loving care of my Grandmother Opal during her many years at home is the reason she could remain in her home until the end.  I have had such a connection to Kansas City for so long and it is sad to think that connection has ended for the Myers family.
I am grateful my connection continues with my cousin Jane Gruschka who I  can never thank enough for caring so selflessly for my Grandmother and Uncle.  She is truly an Angel.
