

Joan Abner Dennett, 78, passed away on July 15, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri from complications of lung cancer. Born on December 14, 1946, in Newport, Arkansas to John C. Abner and Lillian Bernice Drummond. Joan lived a life marked by devotion to her family and a joyful spirit that touched all that knew her.
Joan graduated from Parkhill High School in 1965 and later pursued business classes at Maple Woods Community College. She worked many years of her professional life in the office of Theilen & Theilen, D.D.S. where she was known for her reliability and charm. After retiring, Joan continued to share her nurturing nature by babysitting for family and close friends in her home – a role she cherished deeply.
She was a loving mother to her daughters Joy Oldvader (Kevin) and Janeen Wright. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Kenton “JC” Curfman (Lindsey) and Jaylyn Wright, as well as her great-granddaughter Meredith and an eagerly awaited great-grandson, Everett. Joan also shared a close bond with her sister Wanda Abner McCoy and brother Ronnie Abner. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Wilbur “Buster” Abner, John “Buddy” Abner, and Bill Abner.
Joan found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed traveling as a passenger with motorcycle friends embracing the freedom of the open road. A true lover of nature, she especially admired buffalo and deer and found peace in the outdoors. Her affection extended to animals of all kinds – including her beloved fur babies – who brought companionship and comfort throughout her life.
Those who knew Joan remember her as loving, funny and devoted – a great mother and grandmother whose presence brought warmth to every room. She was adored by many and will be deeply missed.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
