

John was born on September 15, 1944, in Marysville, Kansas to John James Newberry and Jeanne McRae. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1962 before earning a scholarship to play football at the University of Kansas. John was drafted by the United States Army in 1967 and served his country until 1972, including two years in the Vietnam War as a Captain with the Military Police. John was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 4 bronze service stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation. When John returned home, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska. He went on to graduate from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law in 1975, after which he practiced both criminal law and Federal tax law. John served as the Chief Assistant Prosecutor in Clay County, Missouri from 1988 - 2000. Since that time, he has been as associate for Mark A. Ferguson, Attorney At Law.
John was proceeded in death by his parents and his infant son. John is survived by his sister, Pam Newberry (Terry); his children, Jeffrey Newberry, Annette Newberry, John Newberry II, James Newberry (Missi) and Stephen Newberry; and his grandchildren, Christopher Newberry, Nicholas Newberry, Presleigh Newberry, Hailey Newberry, Paisley Newberry, Jessie Newberry and Mackenzie Newberry.
A Visitation for John will be held Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A Funeral Service will begin at 3:00 PM with a Graveside Service and Military Honors to follow, all at White Chapel Funeral Home and Cemetery 6600 NE Antioch Road, Gladstone, MO 64119.
