Ralph was the son of Lester and Luella Carey. He was born on June 3, 1935, in Warrensburg, Missouri. He grew up in Centerview, Missouri and attended Centerview grade school and graduated high school from Warrensburg. Ralph grew up during the great depression and valued working hard. At the age of 16, he started working at the Safeway grocery store in Warrensburg. Following graduation he went to Kansas City and worked at BOP on the airplanes. He later worked at Roberts Storm Door and Window Co. When that business closed he went to work for the, "The Overhead Door Co" in North Kansas City, working his way up to become warehouse manager. He retired after 36 years, for one month then went back to work for them for another 10 years. For many years he rode a bicycle to work because he lived so close. Ralph, most of all, enjoyed working with his hands. He built four slide in truck campers that slept six people in a carport, all from scratch. He also built two homes for his family.
In 1957, he married Shirley D. Wiseman after having met a year prior on a blind date. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Together they raised four sons, Curtis, Keith, Kevin and Michael. The family enjoyed camping, boating, fishing and hunting together. He and Shirley belonged to the Gold Wing Road Riders Motorcycle Association and enjoyed riding their Gold Wing motorcycle with other club members to dinner. Sometimes the pair would even travel over 100 miles and tour the US together. Later on the pair joined the KC Northland Sams RV Club.
