Richard was born on February 18, 1941, to John H. Murray, Sr. and Dorothy Inez Murray in Leavenworth, KS. Richard grew up and attended school in Leavenworth, graduating in 1959.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Merriam (1965-1993). They had two children, Kelli and Matthew, who they raised in Leavenworth, KS; Littleton, CO; Phoenix, AZ; and Tucson, AZ. He later married Connie Crockett in 1995, and enjoyed nearly 31 years together in Gladstone, MO.
Richard served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves. After college, he taught middle-school algebra. He was later hired by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) as a teacher. He promoted to various other positions and retired from the BOP as a Community Corrections Manager from the North Central Regional Office in 1994 after over 20 years of service.
Dick and Connie loved to travel with some of their favorite locations being Las Vegas, Mexico, and cruising. Richard loved to hunt and spent over 40 years participating in an annual hunt with his brother, John, and their best friend, Gary McRill. Dick and Connie also enjoyed fishing and spent many good times at their lake cabin, The Mole Hole. For many years they also enjoyed fishing trips in Minnesota. Dick was a longtime fan of the Kansas City Chiefs as well as the University of Kansas Jayhawks. He will be remembered as a storyteller, in previous years his prison tales or fishing and hunting adventures, but in recent years it was mostly stories of his grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, John.
He is survived by his children Kelli (Gordon) Harpe and Matthew Murray; his step-sons Steven (Colleen Power) Crockett and Jay (Tiffiny) Crockett; nine grandchildren Matthew (Cindy) Harpe, Rachael (John) Wolfner, Stephen (Brooke) Harpe, Christine Harpe, Lawrence Baldridge, Nicholas Crockett, Aurelia Power, Cameron Crockett, and Chase Crockett; and four great-granddaughters Winnie, Mackie, Vivian and Layla.
The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date.
