Born on August 9, 1942, in Fort Scott, Kansas, to Bud and Ellen Harris, and was raised in Hepler, Kansas. She met her husband, Charles “Charlie” Bird, when she was just a freshman in high school. Together they shared 32 years of marriage and one son, Michael Bird, two grandchildren, Brandon (Amanda) and Ashley, and two great-grandchildren, Belle and Charlie (named after his great-grandpa Charlie).
Sandy dedicated 36 years of her career to Cook Paint Co. before retiring. Her love of children and her desire to stay active brought her to a daycare where she shared her joy and care with countless little ones. When she finally retired for good, her servant heart led her to volunteer with Meals on Wheels, where she continued to touch lives with her kindness.
A faith-filled Catholic woman, Sandy was a proud parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for 53 years. She was deeply devoted to her faith and active in the St. Joseph Table and Friendly Club, finding joy in both service and community.
Sandy loved simple pleasures that brought her closer to the people she loved—playing cards, bingo, and bunco; going on trips and lunches with friends; and spending time in her yard. She was a hardworking woman who took great pride in her home, in her cooking, and most of all, in her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were truly the heart of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Bird; her parents, Bud and Ellen Harris; brothers Bill Harris, Don Harris; her sister, Elaine O’Brien; brother-in-law Bernie O’Brien.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Lynn) Bird; granddaughter, Ashley Bird, Courtney and Brandy; grandson, Brandon (Amanda) Bird; great-grandchildren, Belle and Charlie Bird, Layla and Ella; her brother Larry Harris; her sister Jean Nichols; sister-in-laws Penny Harris and Pat Harris; brother-in-law David (Norma) Bird, her godchildren Russell Coy, Debbie Sutton and Kassie Long and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close.
Visitation will be held from 10–11 AM on September 13th at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with Mass to follow at 11 AM. A private lunch for close family will be held following the service with entombment at Newcomer’s White Chapel Funeral Cemetery at 3 PM at the Mausoleum.
In lieu of other remembrances, plants and flowers may be sent to Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.
Sandy will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her generous heart, and the countless ways she showed her love to others. Her legacy of family, friendship, and devotion will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
