

Steve was born on May 25, 1947, in Kansas City, MO, to Paul and Juanita McKinney. He lived a life defined by dedication, love, and service.
Steve graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1965 and served honorably in the United States Army from July 1966 to May 1969. During his service, he bravely fought in the Vietnam War. Embodying courage and commitment which earned him the Bronze Star. In 1976, he married the love of his life, Vicky Shanks. Steve worked for Ford Motor Company in various capacities from 1970 until his well-earned retirement.
Steve was an avid reader who cherished time spent with family at the Lake of the Ozarks. He found joy in fishing, boating, and fireworks and loved visiting the casino with family and friends. Steve loved reminding everyone how “lucky” he was when he won $100.
Steve is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vicky McKinney; his mother, Juanita McKinney; and his father, Paul D. McKinney.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Tobias, son-in-law Adam, and grandchildren Cade and Brynn, who will forever remember him as the best papa; daughter, Michelle McKinney; son, Garrett McKinney; brother, Stan McKinney and his wife Phyllis; sister, Tonya McCall and her husband Jeff; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 7th, from 9–11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Graveside burial will take place around noon, with a reception to follow at the home of Elizabeth Tobias. All are welcome to join in celebrating Steve’s life.
In lieu of flowers, Steve would have wanted you to do something productive, like donate to Folds of Honor at kansascity.foldsofhonor.org. Or, you know, buy yourself a nice meal and toast to his memory.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible caregivers at Monarch Hospice, especially AnnaLisa, for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Steve and his family.
